He starred collegiately at Northwestern from 1968 to 1969 as a sophomore backup when injury knocked out the starter and earned honorable mention All Big-Ten in 1968 when he set a Wildcats’ record for total offense while leading the league in passing attempts and completions. After graduating in 1971, he was a grad assistant at NU before spending 3 seasons as offensive coordinator at Wabash College. In high school, Shelbourne’s Lew Wallace Hornets were nearly unstoppable, going 18-0 with their starting QB in his junior and senior years, completing 60 percent of his passes for 20 touchdowns, 2,000 yards and only 3 interceptions in that time. He also played basketball and baseball, earning 8 varsity letters.

Dave and wife Nancy have been married for 53 years. They have two sons: Mike and Scott, ages 47 and 45.
