Mildred Morgan Ball, a graduate of Gary Roosevelt High School, Indiana University, and Purdue University, is a pioneer for women when it comes to sports. Mildred began her career early as being a staunch supporter of women’s sports, and while she was attending Gary Roosevelt, she served as the President of the Girls Athletic Association. Mildred was the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) Assistant Commissioner from 1977 through 1997 and is responsible for the licensing and training of officials. In addition, she worked with the National Federation of State High Schools Association which writes the contest rules for the 16,000 high schools in the United States. Some of the committees she served on included: Playing Rules Policy, National Conference Planning, Girls Gymnastics Rules Writing, Sports Equity, and the Midwest Regional Committee for the Training of Contest Officials. Throughout her career, she has been a Clinician and/or Speaker at numerous banquets, workshops and clinics for coaches, officials, athletic administrators, state association administrators in Indiana and at national athletic conferences. She was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1998. The Indiana Basketball Coaches Association has presented an award to an outstanding basketball official in Mildred Ball’s name since 1997.
