CHARLES “CHUCK” ADKINS

Charles "Chuck" Adkins was an accomplished boxer, known for winning a gold medal at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics in the light welterweight division. Born in Gary, Indiana, and a graduate of Gary Roosevelt High School, he began boxing at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks. Adkins won the AAU lightweight title in 1949, marking his first national championship.

He competed in the 1952 Olympics, where he defeated Viktor Mednov of the Soviet Union in the final by a 2-1 decision. Charles Adkins’ bout versus Viktor Mednov was the first ever sanctioned world class boxing match between U.S. and Soviet boxers.

After his boxing career, Adkins remained involved in the sport until his passing on July 8, 1993. His contributions to boxing are remembered, particularly his Olympic success, which inspired many young athletes.
